      Hannibal - Series Premiere Review

The story of Hannibal Lecter gets a fresh imagining from NBC this year and it is deliciously appealing. Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) plays the enigmatic psychiatrist Lecter, who is brought in to consult on an FBI investigation into a serial killer. Familiar territory then, but it is Hugh Dancy's character Will Graham, who steals the lime light and is the driving force behind the show.

Graham's brilliance and 'technique' are clearly the reason for the resurgence of Thomas Harris' characters to the small screen. However, Graham also has his demons; his technique of understanding serial killers is his total empathy with them; allowing him to put himself in their shoes, which is graphically detailed even in the shows opening scene. It is this 'empathy' though, that is driving Will further away from humanity, and it looks like it could be just a matter of time before Will himself snaps.

We get a glimpse of the Hannibal we already know, devouring victims' vital organs, all the while keeping an eerie elegance and sophistication that keeps your eyes glued to Mikkelsen's scene stealing presence. Coupled with his native Danish accent, it all adds to a severe package of horror, suspense and charm.

Well thought out, well acted and easily room for a number of series before we reach the events of Red Dragon; Hannibal is definitely one to keep an eye on.

Hannibal aires May 7th on Sky Living and is available on Sky Go now.
